I know you are thinking that as Motocross Madness is a bike game from the late 90s it has probably aged pretty poorly. Well, I can tell you right away that there is a kind of charm to this old-school bike racer that many modern games simply cannot match. Sure, it is basic as hell by today's standards, but this is a game that is a fun time and while it may not have a lot of staying power, it is great for short bursts here and there.

Let’s Get Muddy!

For a game that was released in 1998, Motocross Madness has more than enough game modes. You have the Stunt Quarry, Baja, national and Supercross modes to play through. The main game mode where you try to prove you are the best motocross rider around by winning races is your typical fare than you would expect. The other game modes are a nice distraction and are probably what you will spend the majority of your time doing.

Hitting The Jumps

Part of the reason I feel this game holds up is that it is so easy to play. There is a decent selection of bikes for you to use and a ton of tracks as well. Most of the backgrounds look the same, but each track has its own layout. The game controls well enough and I would say that it leans more towards the arcade-style of racer than it does sim. That is fine with me though as it makes this a game that is very easy to pick up and play.

You can play with the keyboard well enough which is good as from what I can tell, this is a game that is very finicky when it comes to using certain controllers so that is something to keep in mind.

Motocross Customizer

For a game released in 1998, Motocross Madness goes all in with the customization thing. You can customize your rider in many different ways. You have lots of options at your disposal when it comes to tinkering with your bike. Best of all there is a track editor that allows you to come up with some pretty crazy motocross tracks. I tried to make one that was all jumps. I thought it sounded like a great idea, but it did not exactly work out how I thought it would. Those who love to mess around making stuff in games will have a great time with this.

3D Acceleration

Remember in the 90s how it was all about having that 3D accelerator card or whatever you like to call it? Well, that is the case here. I know that the graphics are nothing to brag about by today's standards, but at the time this level of 3D in a game, especially a motocross game like this was a pretty big deal. It moves fast and looks pretty decent too so I have no complaints about the visuals apart from the fact they clearly show their age.

I know a game like Motocross Madness is not going to be everyone’s cup of tea, but I was surprised by how much fun I had with this. While it is very shallow in comparison to what we have these days in regards to motocross games. I feel that the fun factor is pretty high here and it makes this the kind of game that is ideal for fire up if you are looking for something quick, easy, and most importantly fun to play for 30 minutes or so.

Final Score

Pros:

  • Overall, this is a much more fun game than you would think
  • I liked how many different game modes there were
  • The game has a kind of arcadey feel to the controls
  • Doing tricks is cool
  • You can customize lots of aspects of this game

Cons:

  • It is very basic in pretty much every regard
  • It sure as hell looks like it is a game from 1998!

Description of Moto Extreme Windows

Read Full DescriptionMotocross madness 2 mac download free

Moto Extreme is a so-so motocross game from Artech that pales beside Road Rash and Moto Racer, although admittedly Moto Extreme tries to be a different kind of game.

While Moto Racer is a 'real life' motocross racing game, Moto Extreme takes a Carmageddon approach: you can punch or kick your opponents off their bikes along the way. In fact, you will be forced to do that before they do the same thing to you.

Moto Extreme gives you 8 fun off-road courses spanning the globe, plus a secret lunar course you have to discover. You can select from 3 different bikes for each race, with the usual variability in speed and maneuverability. You can also configure a number of settings, such as window style, the amount of roadside objects and visible distance on the track. One of the best things about the game is the variety of terrain. You will have to negotiate icy patches, snow, oil slicks, water or treacherous desert sands.

Although it is an arcade-oriented game, Moto Extreme implements a number of real-world features, such as brakes and the ability to shift your weight forward and backward on the bike - crucial for those slippery slope. The game also includes a two-player mode, which lets two players race on the same computer. Fans of Carmageddon will feel right at home with Moto Extreme. You not only can punch and kick your opponents, but even jump on their helmets (!) from behind. Even if you are not successful, you are bound to get a couple of good laughs.

Unfortunately, user controls leave much to be desired, and bike handling is not as smooth or as realistic as it should be. The worst thing is the almost nonexistent challenge: although you can choose from 3 different skill levels (amateur, expert, and pro), the game is quite easy even on pro level - all you need to do is keep swaying from side to side and accelerate as often as you can. This shatters any illusion of challenge, and make the game more boring than fun.

Yet another example of a game that starts with a neat concept, but fails in its execution. Play Road Rash instead of this mediocre underdog.
